Best’s Wines was established in 1866 by the pioneering Henry Best and sold to neighbour and second generation vigneron, Frederick P Thomson in 1920.

Under the guidance of the Thomson family, the Best’s name has continued to thrive.

Fourth generation vigneron, Viv Thomson and son Ben continue to combine traditional methods with modern technology to create wines of renown and integrity.

Notes... Riesling vines were first planted as part of Henry Best’s ‘Nursery Block’ vineyard in the 1860’s. Then from subsequent plantings in 1944 and 1978, Riesling has become a significant part of our regime. The Riesling vines from Great Western produce flavoursome, elegantly structured, spectacularly age-worthy Rieslings which stand confidently alongside some of the most outstanding Australian examples of the variety.

Pristine in colour with bright green hues. Bouquet of fresh flowers along with lime and citrus notes. A flavoursome front palate displaying great varietal intensity, floral and zesty, with great aromatics. Minerality, balance and texture are working together harmoniously to produce a wine with great tension.

This wine has previously shown an ability to gain further complexity and aged regional characters as time goes by. Drink to 2020.

Vintage 2011 was a fantastic season for white wines in Great Western. Despite a challenging season with lots of rainfall, canopy and yield management allowed pristine fruit to develop. Unlike previous years, there were few hot periods, which allowed the wines to ripen naturally, with lemon and lime blossom flavours and great acid balance. A stand out season for Riesling.

Occasions... Makes a fabulous wine for home, out to dinner somewhere or as a gift for the wine lover who likes to cellar wines and compare changes within the same wine as time drives on.

Food... Vegetarian, Pasta, Salads, Cheese, Fruit Salad, Fish, Oysters, Octopus, Shellfish, Chinese,

Tosh Says... Best's of Great Western have made superior quality wines for a long time. This Riesling is really zesty and lively, but I can't wait to taste it again in a year or two when it has settled down even more and developed into something I think will be very much worth the wait for. Drink chilled on a warm day - very refreshing!

Shiraz has been produced at Best’s Great Western since the late 1800s, although the actual date of the first ‘Bin 0’ Great Western Shiraz is lost in the annuals of time. What is certain is that Best’s Bin 0 Shiraz is generally produced from Best’s oldest plantings and selected from the lowest yielding blocks of the historic Concongella vineyard at Great Western. This includes nineteenth century and mid twentieth century plantings of Shiraz which result in very low yielding, intense vines. The fruit is hand-selected, sorted and fermented in small-batches followed by rigorous barrel selection.

Bin 0 is made to be an age worthy style and has been the undisputed icon of the Great Western Shiraz style for many decades. It is internationally acclaimed as one of Australia’s finest Shiraz wines.

Today’s market is rediscovering the attractions of the classic values of drinkability, structure and texture in Shiraz. Understated richness with elegance and spice, approachability and food friendliness are the hallmarks of Bin 1 Shiraz.

Given the inevitable scarcity of Best’s Thomson Family and Bin 0 Shiraz wines, Bin 1 Shiraz is the wine that gives people their first taste of our style of Great Western Shiraz. Made predominantly from Best’s own vineyards and meticulously crafted with the same attention to detail as the flagship wines, Bin 1 Shiraz represents the essence of Best’s Great Western’s winemaking ideals and the uniqueness of the Great Western region. Bin 1 is a classic, cool climate, aromatic Shiraz, made in a style that is floral, spicy and peppery and yet retains the fruit characteristics and intensity. It is a well balanced wine with no dominance of alcohol.

Winemaker Adam Wadewitz notes that “this wine is made in an elegant, approachable style. We want people to understand that this is a wine made to drink now and enjoy the flavour profile from Shiraz made in the Great Western region. Bin 1 is a great accompaniment to food, and meant to celebrate the years of learning and winemaking history from Best’s Great Western. I feel very privileged to be making a wine that has the same care given to it as our Flagship wines, but sells at a more affordable price for many more consumers to enjoy."

If Great Western were somehow prohibited from growing Shiraz, it would probably be just as famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon. Intense spicy, berry, leafy aromas and long, dense, yet supple flavours and classic structure are hallmarks of Great Western Cabernet Sauvignon. With age, they develop remarkable finesse and elegance.

Cabernet Sauvignon from Great Western works well from the right sites, warmer and north facing sites tend to produce the best fruit. As is common in other regions, Cabernet Sauvignon in Great Western is picked late in the vintage season to allow for good fruit flavour and texture.

Chardonnay was one of the varietals planted first in the Concongella Vineyard in the 1970’s even though cuttings were extremely hard to come by at the time. Best’s winemaker Adam Wadewitz has considerably experience and a passion for making Chardonnay, having worked at outstanding Chardonnay producers like Petaluma and Brokenwood.

Best’s Great Western Chardonnay is picked early to ensure good acidity and to make sure there is no excess sugar, a feature that has been seen in other Chardonnay styles from the region. The wine does not undergo any malolactic fermentation and is partially fermented in stainless steel with the use of wild yeasts. It is aged in 100% French Oak (usually 20-30% is new). Adam’s intention is to produce a refined, balanced and light wine, driven by clean acid that will age well.

The Great Western and has been made in the region since the early 1900s. Releasing a sparkling version of Best’s famous shiraz was a natural product progression and a great opportunity for Best’s Great Western to refine the style of sparkling shiraz from the region.

Winemaker Adam Wadewitz discovered that certain blocks within the region really lend themselves exceptionally well to the sparkling shiraz style. He sought counsel from Best’s owner Viv Thomson as well as Ian Mackenzie (formerly a winemaker at Seppelt) to ensure the wine spoke of place but also was characteristic of the regional style. The shiraz grapes are picked early, made in vats and see no oak treatment at all. The result is a wine with a medium body which retains its freshness and intensity with age. Adam’s goal is to ensure that Best’s Great Western Sparkling Shiraz defines the Great Western region and is an elegant, refined and well balanced wine.
